We are keenly aware of the impact our firm has on the environment and the role we must play as leaders to ensure its sustainability. At KPMG we lead by example serving as stewards for the world around us.
At KPMG we are always focused on the long-term impacts of our decisions. That is why environmental sustainability is a pillar of KPMG’s corporate responsibility strategy.
Through KPMG’s Living Green program, KPMG is committed to reducing our organization’s impact on the environment. Our people across the country are integrating cleaner, smarter, more sustainable practices into the way we do business – from operations to supplier relationships to the way we serve our clients and communities.
KPMG’s commitment to “living green” begins with investing in our infrastructure, and using energy-efficient technologies and designs to reduce our energy and water consumption and carbon footprint. We are also seeking out renewable energy sources and plan to continuously increase our use of them. Our environmentally responsible conduct is also evident in the way we engage the broader marketplace. We offer a suite of Tax and Advisory services that enable our clients to reduce their environmental impact.
Engagement teams are encouraged to consider both traditional and non-traditional ways of demonstrating to our clients the firm’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Using our Engagement Emissions Tool we are able to track emissions generated via travel and energy usage during client engagements – encouraging sustainable behavior among our teams. Reports produced as a result of the Emissions Tool help us to inform and raise awareness among our clients. We are also particularly focused on seeking alternatives to air travel, which represents the majority of our carbon footprint.
Living Green is integrated into KPMG’s Family for Literacy program, which is focused on helping to eradicate childhood illiteracy. Several of the new books we provide to children in low-income communities focus on how we can better care for our environment and the importance of doing so. We donate proceeds of our organization’s toner cartridge recycling program to the nonprofit social enterprise First Book to secure additional new books for children in need. KPMG partners with Net Impact and World Business Council for Sustainable Development on environmental protection projects, joining forces with business leadership groups to address environmental issues.
KPMG, in alliance with the Arbor Day Foundation, plants a tree in a National Forest in honor of each new hire that joins the firm. KPMG’s Living Green Week is a firm wide effort that involves our people in offices across the firm volunteering in various “green-focused” activities to reinforce our ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability.
In addition to Living Green week activities, KPMG’s offices play an integral part in helping the firm work toward minimizing environmental impact in the workplace and raise awareness year round. From ensuring all our major office renovations and new office construction meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), to contributing to solid waste reduction by recycling office equipment and every day supplies, and utilizing green meeting resources Living Green is alive in offices throughout the firm.
