I am a Transactions and Restructuring Partner at KPMG in China’s Shanghai office, leading a team of around 150 professionals. I look after global clients seeking to invest or expand in China as well as working with domestic Chinese clients on transactions or restructuring related projects.

I joined KPMG in 1994 and transferred to what is now Financial Advisory Services in 1997. In 1999 I left KPMG to return home to the UK, as my son was just a year old and I wanted to go home after five years away. However, as a career move that didn’t work out. But luckily, following some informal emails with my former boss, I rejoined KPMG in Hong Kong in spring 2004, and then I transferred to Advisory in Shanghai in summer 2005 before being promoted to partner at KPMG China in July 2006.

My ACA training and exams gave me a good business foundation, but KPMG’s training has equipped me with better skills for dealing with people, such as communicating, coaching and building relationships. As a partner, this is very important as your whole job is dealing with people.

The firm has been quick to roll out new training materials and courses to help us assist clients in a downturn, which is important as we rapidly expand our restructuring related businesses. The financial crisis in late 2008 has also presented me with the opportunity to help build and lead a growing Restructuring focused team to help clients adapt to new challenges.

One of the best lessons I have learned at KPMG is not to worry. However difficult tasks might seem at the outset - tight project deadlines or managing the relationship with a demanding client — it will work out. If you plan the work and give your best, clients recognize it.

Finally, if you’re joining KPMG, set yourself some challenging goals and map out how you want to achieve these with your mentors.
