Canada - Mining activity taxation, royalties

March 13: Besides taxation at the federal government level, each of Canada’s provinces and territories (except for Prince Edward Island, which has no mining activity) also imposes separate mining taxes on mining activities or royalties from mining.

In many respects, Canada’s tax environment is favorable to business and, in particular, to mining activities. Yet, there are some features of the Canadian tax system that are viewed as not being so favorable to the mining industry.

The KPMG member firm in Canada has prepared a booklet summarizing the mining industry in Canada that includes a section on taxation. The report covers the separate mining taxes or royalties on mining activities that are imposed, as well as available tax relief related to mining activities.
