The 2011 Fukushima accident led to the closure of all Japan’s 55 nuclear reactors, constraining the country’s security of supply. Japan is running its thermal power plants at full capacity to meet demand. Vast quantities of LNG used for gas-fired generation are almost 100% dependent on imports, leading to significant geopolitical and economic pressures.
