Defined Contribution (DC) Investments

As the Defined Contribution (DC) market has become more developed and pension scheme assets increased, the issues facing our clients have become more challenging, particularly in relation to investment. Therefore, it has become increasingly important to have a deep understanding of a far broader range of issues affecting our DC clients. We have undertaken a number of DC investment default and fund range reviews for our clients over recent months for trustee groups and governance bodies and are supported in this work by our Investment Manager and Investment Research teams which are fully focused on DC matters. Within these areas, the key asset class research teams provide their own specialist support to DC making sure that not only is research undertaken to cover the key asset classes but also to investigate new opportunities for DC investment.

Our DC Investment specialist team is fully integrated with both the Investment department and the DC Solutions group, and personnel are located across the regions providing specialist technical expertise to all our DC clients and supporting the development of new ideas. The specialist team is also involved with all of the necessary research functions to support the required market knowledge to give joined-up and rounded advice.

Fund Range Design

The drive for better engagement with your pension provision can be supported through strong fund range design. Establishing investment choice based on more easily understandable decisions such as risk-grading, fee level, or approach to retirement income provides members with greater propensity for decision making, and hence, engagement.

Default Design

Whether your scheme is a trust-based or contract-based arrangement, getting the design of the default right is critically important as a significant proportion of members will be invested in the default option. There are a number of factors to consider when looking to design a default, such as attitude to risk and portfolio cost, and we will support you in understanding these areas before working with you to design an appropriate default for your members.

Monitoring

There are a number of factors to consider when monitoring your default and fund range:

Strategy – analysis using our strategy performance tool to review the quality of the strategy against key metrics and market benchmarks

Portfolio – DC funds are tending to be set-up as portfolios of different funds. We can provide analysis to show the value added from each composite fund

Manager – analysis and review of managers against key performance criteria
