Growing Up: A New Environment for Hedge Funds

With most managers, now recognizing that the sector is on the cusp of a significant shift in investors, products and markets, KPMG partnered with the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA) and the Managed Funds Association (MFA) to ask hedge managers, how these changes will impact their strategies, products, models and selection of markets. The report from the latest global hedge fund survey, incorporates the views of more than 100 hedge fund managers from around the globe.

Among the key findings:

·         The majority of managers believe that pension funds will be their primary source of capital by 2020.

·         In the next 5 years, 46 percent of managers expect to either alter their strategy or launch new products to attract institutional investors, while more than two-thirds say they expect to offer specialized fee structures.

·         Increased regulation continues to be a concern, with 77 percent citing as the biggest threat to industry.
