Interview with Lord Hastings
Lord Michael Hastings of Scarisbrick is KPMG International Director for Corporate Citizenship. Here he offers potential applicants to KPMG member firms his views on the importance of corporate citizenship to KPMG and its people.
Lord Hastings, why it is important for a business to be a good global citizen?
Everybody has some consciousness of society, community and global issues. These used to be the preserve of governments, NGOs and charities. But quite rightly, people now look to successful businesses to take a lead, and help make a difference. People living with poverty, disease and sub-standard education struggle to be economically productive. Address these issues and you can improve the stability and security of the global economy, of which we are all a part.
Why is corporate citizenship so important for KPMG?
We have strong values and we are serious about turning these into practical strategies for society by applying our intellectual and technical skills. This responsible approach also helps us maintain our leadership position as a recognized brand, highly respected for our people.
How do you think KPMG differs from other professional services organizations?
Our people demonstrate a passionate commitment to society, and want to rally round. Just as importantly, our firms' leadership supports this commitment, allowing people the freedom to exercise their values. At KPMG, nobody feels they have to leave the issues they care about behind at their front door. They choose to work here because our values are so strong... because they want to be part of a place where they can apply their skills to community issues with as much energy as they do for a paying client.
So global citizenship helps attract good people?
Most definitely. Our firms are growing and constantly searching for new people. Most people need and want a career. But at the same time, more and more people are looking for the opportunity to develop as dignified human beings. We offer that. And if we are seen to be serious about our values, and ensure that people can hold the organization to account, people will stay with us.
How does global citizenship help those people flourish personally and professionally?
By applying their professional skills to help charitable agencies and providers become better managed, our people can naturally pick up new skills. And you can't understate the extra sense of purpose and self-worth that people develop when they feel they are genuinely making a difference and helping to create a better world for everyone.
How does KPMG plan to develop its work in global citizenship?
Corporate Responsibility now goes much deeper than basic philanthropy and facilitating. The new challenge for us is to develop a leadership position on things that affect the structure of societies and communities. We are doing this in three ways:
- We are using our intellectual ability to influence how people approach the issues affecting our society today.
- We are making sure we have CR leadership at a senior level in all member firms, concentrating on initiatives that can make a difference within their own country.
- And we are identifying what businesses can do at a global level to help achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals and help the very poorest people in our society.
