Living Earth Case Study: The Role of the Accountability Corps in the GTF Project

A group of volunteers, nurtured within the Good Governance in the Niger Delta project, who are working to assert communities’ rights and development needs.  The Accountability Corps gives a focus for putting hard questions to government constructively.

The Accountability Corps is a unique aspect of the Governance and Transparency Fund (GTF) project. It comprises ten volunteers - often young people who are agile and active, and not easily intimidated. At first, few thought that local government officials and contractors would take the Corps members seriously and actually give them information about development projects in their areas: the members hit a blank wall in trying to get the information they needed to monitor the performance of local government projects and contractors sometimes ordered them off the project sites, or refused to give details even as simple as the name of the company implementing the project.
