Does your internal audit create added value?

The increasing significance of internal audits – and the growing trust that audit committees put in them – mean higher demands on the performance of internal auditors.

What is it about?

There are many arguments for improving the relations between audit committees and internal auditors. According to a survey conducted by KPMG‘s Audit Committee Institute, although 46 percent of members of audit committees are "very satisfied" with the efficiency of internal audits, the majority is only "fairly satisfied" or sees room for improvement. As a rule, opportunities for improvement exist in an expedient merger of compliance and operations in the role of the internal audit.

What are the challenges?

  • Positioning– Is internal audit strategically positioned to enable it to contribute to business performance?
  • People– Does internal audit have the right staffing strategy to deliver on the agreed objectives?
  • Processes – Do internal audit’s processes enable it to achieve its objectives, and is the department responsive to changing business needs?

How can KPMG help you?

Internal audit functions which provide the greatest value to their stakeholders are those with a clear understanding of the value they can offer and a vision of how they can deliver that value.

We can help your internal audit functions work towards this goal by:

  • Establishing or coaching your internal audit function.
  • Providing specialists to perform high value audits (e.g. treasury, IT, supply chain, contract compliance).
  • Developing data analytics solutions (continuous auditing).
  • Performing a quality review of your internal audit function to review compliance with standards and to identify development potential.
  • Supporting initiatives linking risk management, compliance activities and internal audit.
