Mining is an important part of the economy, especially given the country has some of the world’s highest-grade copper deposits, a low taxation environment and low political interference. The country’s mining industry engages in the production of copper, coal, cobalt, lead, zinc, silver and gold.

  • In 2011 Zambia was the world’s sixth largest copper producer, accounting for 4.4 percent of global output.
  • Zambian coal production is expected to grow in excess of 2 million tonnes by 2017.
