Developing healthcare in Africa: Opportunities amid challenges

Globally, the healthcare sector is facing enormous, complex challenges. In Africa, the problems of healthcare are particularly acute. With 10 percent of the world population and 25 percent of the global disease burden, Africa accounts for less than one percent of global health spend and only two percent of the global health workforce.

 

Despite these challenges, Africa is seen by some as a ‘new frontier’ of healthcare opportunity. Governments are radically re-thinking the structure of their health systems and are looking for ways to develop new healthcare services and new infrastructure. At the same time, innovations in healthcare technology are creating opportunities to bring cutting-edge care to patients in remote areas.
