Women Corporate Directors (WCD) launches South Africa Chapter

WomenCorporateDirectors (WCD) is launching the South Africa Chapter of the organisation on Thursday 20 September 2012.

WCD is a global membership organisation and community of women corporate directors with over 1 400 members serving on more than 1 550 boards in 42 chapters around the world. WCD members share information and insights in order to ensure best practices in corporate governance around the world.

“Various researchers point to the correlation between women executives and the financial performance of an organisation. They found that the ways in which women directors behave can contribute immensely to organisational health, although that is not necessarily causal.” says Tshidi Mokgabudi, co-Chair for WCD South Africa

WCD Chapters already exist in Africa, including in South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco, however, South Africa is the first African Chapter to host an event of this nature. The South Africa Chapter is co-chaired by Tshidi Mokgabudi, Executive and Policy Board Director at KPMG and Phuti Mahanyele CEO of Shanduka Group.

Tshidi Mokgabudi, founder and co-Chair of WCD South Africa says that the organisation is committed to bringing more board effectiveness through diversity in the boardroom.

“In the 21st Century, it is important for us to focus on increasing the number of women Executive Directors and women Chief Executive Officers in the boardroom.” says Tshidi.

The mission of the Chapter is to continue to expand the WCD community through leadership, diversity, education, best practices in corporate governance, and a focus on experience-sharing, (on-board) placement, training and mentoring opportunities.

Sponsored by KPMG, the event will take place in Sandhurst, Johannesburg, with the key note speaker Wendy Luhabe, Founder and Chairman at Women Private Equity Fund.

This will be followed by a thought-provoking roundtable discussion on the Convergence of High Growth Markets in Africa: Impact on Boards, facilitated by women directors from various boards, including Tshidi Mokgabudi, co-Chair of WCD South Africa, Donna M. O Oosthuyse, Managing Director and Country Officer SA at Citigroup, Zodwa Manase, Chief Executive Officer at Manase & Associates and Lullu Krugel, Senior Economist KPMG.
