The Strategy Group

KPMG’s Strategy Group helps clients solve their critical strategic issues by combining deep market insight, rigorous financial expertise and implementation know-how.

Our clients value our fresh industry insights, operational experience and technical skills to grow, enter new markets, create new business models and business plans, commercialise, and deal with financial challenges, as well as our M&A advice through the M&A cycle.

Leveraging our global network of, functional specialists and in-market sector expertise, we bring to bear the full capability of KPMG in providing investor grade, pragmatic advice on critical commercial questions, such as:

  • What are the most attractive ways to grow revenue and improve margin?
  • Which new business models and vehicles can generate value quickly?
  • Which target should we acquire or venture to accelerate growth, and what is the synergy it will generate?
  • Is our operating model and cost structure aligned to strategy, and is it scalable?
  • Do we have the right portfolio of businesses, assets and capabilities, or do we need to acquire/build/divest?

How can we help?

Our capabilities fall into three broad categories, and we can provide guidance to these key questions:

Business Strategy

  • What options do we have to grow given market, competitive and regulatory change?
  • Which markets should we be in, and where should we invest within those markets?
  • How do we segment our clients to enhance revenues and margins?
  • How do we optimise our corporate or product portfolios given limited capital?

We leverage up-to-date market insight from a variety of different lenses to identify growth opportunities, develop superior business positioning, and to put human, physical and financial capital to work.

Operational strategy

  • What should our operating model be in light of our revised strategy?
  • What is the upside value that can be created by operational improvement to increase margin and revenue, and reduce cost and working capital?
  • How much value can be generated by improving pricing?
  • Do we have visibility of the operating performance across our portfolio?

We work with clients to help answer these vital questions so that corporate objectives, strategy and operations are aligned and connected.

Deal strategy

  • What is the best way to enter a new market (acquisition, joint venture or partnership) and how can we make it happen?
  • Which targets should we consider and what would they give us?
  • Is the target’s business plan achievable – can the market absorb management’s volume, mix and price projections (Commercial Due Diligence); and, is the business factoring in sufficient capacity to achieve planned volumes?
  • How robust is the target’s current transformation programme (profit improvement, operating model changes); are targets and actions underpinned by reasonable assertions; is the governance robust with a track record of success?
  • What is the scale of potential revenue and cost synergies?

By combining market and transactional expertise, we can provide assurance and advice on key transaction questions to help clients to originate deals, identify potential targets or partners, and to generate or protect value through acquisition, joint ventures or disposals.
