Get a grip on your finances

Transcript:

Jacky Ross on public sector cuts and tackling the impacts on non-core services and the back office

Get a grip on your finances

The biggest barrier to making these changes is often that organisations don’t know where they’re spending their money. They don’t know the value that that money is deriving. So, in order to think through what might I stop doing, what might I need to stream line, what might I share with others, what value would I get by taking any of those courses of action, we need to get a grip on the numbers, we need to get a grip on where we spend our money and the impact that makes on our business. And if we can get to grips with that financial information, we can make much better informed decisions and we’ll know that they’re going to deliver the sorts of cost savings that we want and deliver the sorts of cost services that we need to keep on delivering.

The need to deliver more for less and the requirement to provide absolute visibility as to how this will be achieved means that the challenge facing finance functions in the public sector is greater than ever before. This has been emphasised by the recent Government paper “Open Public Services”.

Initial talk of public sector savings targets around 20-30% contrast with the reality of today where savings need to be closer to 40-50% in order to make a real difference.
