Essentials: Sustainability assurance

Transcript:

Sustainability is now an accepted part of the corporate landscape, with companies making very public commitments to do things like reduce their C02 emissions, cut energy use, protect the environment and make a positive contribution to their local communities.

These commitments and the progress towards them are often formalised in the annual sustainability report, which is now an accepted companion to the annual report.

But whereas financial figures are supported by large in-house finance teams and professionally audited, sustainability reporting rarely receives such support and assurance.

Sustainability data is inherently prone to error and when it’s left unchecked, it leads to published information which can be inaccurate or unsubstantiated.

It’s not really surprising then that, without assurance, fewer than one in ten consumers actually believe what businesses say about their sustainability achievements.

Getting your numbers wrong can seriously damage your reputation. What message does it send to your stakeholders about your business generally? How can you be effectively managing the sustainability agenda if the data you are using to measure your performance is wrong?

A sustainability audit demonstrates to stakeholders that you’re serious about what you’re doing. It adds credibility to your achievements but also, when done well, provides management with feedback on their sustainability management and performance.

So who can our clients trust with assurance? KPMG has auditing in its DNA. It’s what we do.  We have been ranked the top sustainability assurance provider for two years running.

And with over twenty years’ experience we have a clear grasp of the issues, of the risks and opportunities facing business.

An independent sustainability audit can enhance an organisation’s credibility and help improve the effectiveness of its strategic imperatives.
