Communicating auto-enrolment change to employees

Transcript:

Do you know what kind of pension scheme you’ve got?

  • I don’t remember
  • No
  • No
  • I’m not a member of a scheme
  • No I don’t actually
  • Not thinking about it yet
  • People my age don’t really think about what’s going to happen in 50/40 years’ time whenever we retire
  • I always thought that you’re auto-enrolled and that you get a pension

Andrew Pearson: Auto-enrolment compliance is not straightforward at all; every employer in the UK is going to have to make some fundamental changes to its communications just to comply with auto-enrolment.

The government have set out what the requirements are to comply with auto-enrolment, but there's a huge amount of information there and every employer across the UK is going to have to get to grips with that to understand what information they need to send out to which employees at which period of time.  The rules are there but every employer is going to have to get to grips with it.

  • I think it’s a poor idea, I think anything that forces an employer to behave in a certain way, means that staff will suffer.
  • I don’t think some people will probably be happy with it, because obviously they’re going to probably lose money out of their salary.
  • It depends on the amount though, the amount they’re going to pay in and the amount you have to pay in from your salary really.
  • You can’t ignore it, can you? You’re going to... you’re going to end up retiring with not a lot to spend, and I think it’s just madness to ignore it, isn’t it.

Andrew Pearson: For the first time around seven or eight million people are going to be enrolled into a pension scheme and for lots of those people it's the first time they've even heard about pensions. It's actually the first time that a lot of people have communicated with their employees about pensions so actually compliance is the first step, it's the building block really from which they're going to have to do far more.

KPMG were already working with clients to profile their workforces and understand how their workforce likes to receive information.  And we're creating communication strategies that ensure they comply with the requirements, which is fundamental, but actually it's also giving their employees what they want out of this, as well.

Andrew Pearson discusses the difficulties of communicating auto-enrolment changes to employees.
