Helping to create the Academies of the future

Helping to create the Academies of the future

Academies provide huge opportunities to do things differently and better. The challenge is achieving that goal – which is why Principals, Governors, Trustees and Sponsors in Academies often feel simultaneously daunted and excited at the prospect.

As Local Authority control and support is relinquished, Principals and Governors will need to rapidly acquire the skills they need to ensure that the Academy adopts a business as usual approach.

KPMG has a breadth of expertise in Schools, Colleges, Universities and other charitable organisations. This places us in a unique position to be able to provide the wider support to Academies that makes a difference in the face of the many challenges facing both Schools going through the conversion process and established Academies.

The importance of experience

During this period of change, a partner who has seen and done it all before is invaluable. As one of the leading suppliers of advisory services to the Education sector, and an academy sponsor, KPMG has more experience of life outside of Local Authority control than any other professional services firm.

As you move through this period of significant change we can help you prioritise your time to ensure new challenges such as setting up HR and financial systems, and ensuring payroll runs smoothly. We can also work with you to decide which activities you can handle internally and which you should outsource.

Our Academy – an ‘Outstanding’ case study

The City Academy, Hackney opened in September 2009 and is sponsored by KPMG and the City of London Corporation.  KPMG led the development of the education vision, supported the development of a best practice approach in the provision of ICT, facilities and back office functions and assisted in the recruitment of excellent staff to ensure that the values are delivered.  Read more about the Academy here.

An Ofsted inspection in January 2011 judged that the academy “has made outstanding progress towards raising standards”. It acknowledges that the specialism of the academy has had a “significant impact on raising achievement” through links to business and the expectation that students display the highest standards of professionalism.

Ofsted praised the sponsors for their support, which has “improved provision, enhanced students learning and provided valuable insight into the world of business”
