KPMG has lent its support to a new professional services academy based in Birmingham. The Greater Birmingham Professional Services Academy is being launched by Birmingham’s biggest FE College –Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMET) – and has received the backing of seven major professional services brands highlighting the importance of the sector to the local economy.
Andy Argyle, partner at KPMG who is leading the firm’s role with the Academy said:
“The professional services sector has a strong presence not only here in the city but also across the region as a whole. We want to capitalise on this tradition and bolster the professional services talent pipeline – to ensure we develop the skills needed by the professionals of tomorrow.”
Recruitment for the Greater Birmingham Professional Services Academy starts this month (May) and the innovative concept gets under way in September, with a curriculum focused on qualifications in law, finance, accounting, banking and insurance.
KPMG, together with other professional partners including Deutsche Bank, Gateley LLP, GVA, LaSer UK, Lloyds Bank and Wesleyan Assurance Society, will support BMET by providing high-level professional support for the students.
Andy Argyle said: “Through a structured insight into how a global professional services firm operates, together with tailored mentoring, this approach offers a great opportunity for individuals to really get an idea of what it is like to work in a professional services environment and goes a long way in highlighting just how diverse the roles can be.
“At KPMG we are then able to take this one step further through our innovative school leaver scheme. Once students have completed their A-Level qualifications, there is an opportunity for them to apply to join our school leaver scheme - a six-year programme to gain an accounting degree from either the University of Birmingham, Durham University or the University of Exeter, leading successful candidates to become a fully qualified Chartered Accountant.”
Marianne Fallon, Head of Corporate Affairs at KPMG, said: “It is great to see this exciting initiative get off the ground. It is vital to provide new pathways into the profession for talented young people from all backgrounds. KPMG is delighted to be a supporter of the Academy.”
