Chris Peaker, Director at KPMG, comments on the Welsh Government’s acquisition of Cardiff Airport which completed today:
“This investment by the Welsh Government represents a turning point for Cardiff Airport and should give it a new lease of life. It’s an opportunity to transform it into a vibrant airport and a useful asset for the people of Wales.
“The transaction also signals the beginning of a recovery in investor appetite for the UK's smaller regional airports, a number of which are recovering from significant falls in passenger numbers. On this basis, there are some attractively valued airport assets in the UK, especially those with property development opportunities.
“The successful deal also potentially establishes an important precedent for those arguing for greater public ownership of infrastructure assets. It will be interesting to see whether this will result in calls for greater Scottish Government involvement or even ownership of Prestwick Airport.”
Note to editors: KPMG acted as financial adviser to the Welsh Government during the transaction.
