Ed Thomas, Director at KPMG’s transport advisory group comments:
“Transport was a clear winner in today’s Spending Review as the Chancellor emphasised the Government’s belief in the role of the railways to boost growth. Emphasizing its commitment to Crossrail the Government also signalled a renewed confidence in the UK’s ability to deliver major infrastructure projects.
“The Chancellor stressed the potential of HS2 to transform the economic geography of the UK by bringing the regions closer to London and underlined that the Government would push through with plans to secure parliamentary backing to progress the scheme. The Chancellor also gave firm support to the Mayor of London to accelerate work on Crossrail 2. As rail use continues to grow at record rates, a new link joining the South and North East of the city will provide much needed capacity for commuters over the coming decades.
“Whilst the industry will welcome these announcements they all relate to long-term capital projects. Short-term the industry is still seeking detail around the Government’s proposals to kick-start the UK’s franchising programme. Any future announcements in this area are eagerly awaited.”
