David McCorquodale, UK Head of Retail at KPMG, comments on the latest Retail Sales figures from the Office for National Statistics:
“These figures reflect the fact that the sector is in slightly better shape than last year, but sales growth has stalled after gaining some momentum in the summer months.
“However, consumer confidence is recovering slowly, the economy is growing, and the outlook for retailers is positive. Christmas this year, boosted by the improved omni-channel capabilities of the retailers, is likely to be better than last year.
“In reality it will remain very difficult for retailers to sustain a long term sales revival until wage inflation overtakes cost inflation, and these figures are a reminder of this fact.”
