KPMG has underlined its support for the Living Wage campaign by seconding its Head of CSR, Mike Kelly, to work with Citizens UK for a year. Citizens UK is the umbrella organisation that promotes the Living Wage and runs an accreditation process for employers in all sectors that voluntarily commit to paying it.
Mike will help Citizens UK expand their campaign to bring more employers on-board and raise awareness of the Living Wage. KPMG has paid all directly employed staff, and those employed by its sub contractors and suppliers, the Living Wage since 2006 and became an early accredited payer. Mike is therefore well-placed to help advise employers on the accreditation process.
The secondment comes in the wake of a highly successful Living Wage Week in November last year, during which a new Living Wage rate of £8.55 was announced (£7.45 outside London). The number of organisations paying the Living Wage has more than doubled compared to pre-November levels, currently standing at over 200. There has been particularly strong take up amongst local councils and the DWP also announced that it would be paying the Living Wage to its cleaners.
In the run-up to Living Wage Week, KPMG released research showing that 1 in 5 workers in the UK is paid less than the Living Wage – highlighting the extent of the problem of ‘in-work poverty’.
Mike Kelly said: “This opportunity comes at a pivotal time for the campaign with awareness of ‘in-work poverty’ on many board room agendas. I am looking forward to being able to share KPMG’s experiences and helping to build the increasingly diverse groups of enterprises paying all their employees and contractor staff a Living Wage.”
Marianne Fallon, Head of Corporate Affairs at KPMG, said: “KPMG is a committed supporter of the Living Wage and so we are very pleased to be able to second Mike to work with Citizens UK. We believe that as well as being the right thing to do, paying a Living Wage can make good business sense in terms of greater motivation, productivity and loyalty of staff. I hope that Mike will be able to bring real value to the campaign during his time there.”
Neil Jameson, Executive Director Citizens UK said: “We’re delighted that Mike Kelly is joining the team at Citizens UK. Mike’s wealth of experience will be hugely valuable in taking the Living Wage to the next stage. We’re very grateful to KPMG for their continued support and investment in our work.”
