Teams of professional advisors at KPMG’s headquarters at 15 Canada Square, Canary Wharf raised over £22,000 for Action for Literacy and Shelter in a gruelling 100km rowing challenge last week.
Nineteen teams took to their machines to see who could row 100km in the fastest time – though the real challenge was to see which team could raise the most money for the KPMG national charities in the process.
This is the fifth consecutive year that KPMG has taken part in the ROW100 challenge and the standard is getting higher each year. The 2013 winning team completed their 100km in 5 hours and 58 minutes, smashing the previous record set in 2010 by a massive 14 minutes. This year the race is being rolled out to other offices across KPMG and the competition is heating up.
KPMG has entered into a two year relationship with Action for Literacy and Shelter with the aim of raising more than £1million for the two charities between them.
Mona Bitar, Partner and Head of National Charities at KPMG said: “This was an amazing achievement which everyone benefits a huge amount from. It allows us to support our partners in helping address the key issues of literacy and homelessness in the UK today.”

Action for Literacy is a partnership between Dyslexia Action and National Literacy Trust, who have responded to the changing charity landscape and recognised the value added in joining together to help meet the needs of the communities they support. Their work has strong synergies with KPMG’s existing educational programmes. Many KPMG staff act as reading or numbers partners in local primary schools, for example, and KPMG was one of the founding parties of the Every Child a Chance Trust which calculated the true cost to the UK of poor literacy. KPMG is also joint sponsor of the City Academy, Hackney in London.
Shelter works to tackle the root causes of homelessness and bad housing and help people find and keep a home. Last year Shelter’s helpline and national network of face to face advice services provided housing advice and support to more than 100,000 people. The KPMG partnership will enable the charity’s expert housing advisers to reach an extra 6,900 people in housing need.
