KPMG names Alan Downey as the firm’s new head of public sector across Europe and the Middle East

KPMG has announced the appointment of Alan Downey as its new Head of Public Sector across Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMA).

Alan joined KPMG in 1989.  Previously a senior civil servant he has worked  across the government and healthcare sectors and his focus has been on organisational restructuring, operational transformation and involving private and voluntary sector organisations in the delivery of public services.

He currently leads the firm’s UK public sector practice and has advised on a variety of issues, including the merger of government departments, releasing value from public sector assets and introducing commercial disciplines into the delivery of public services.

Alan takes over the role of Head of Public Sector (EMA) from Ulrich Maas, who will be joining the KPMG Germany Supervisory Board.

Graeme Ross, EMA Head of Markets at KPMG, says: “Alan’s deep experience across the public sector has enabled him to build a reputation for delivering results that improve the efficiency and performance of our public sector clients.  His knowledge of public sector reform means he is well placed to add value to our public sector clients across our EMA network.”

Alan will retain his role as Head of Government in the UK.  He comments: “Living as we do in tough economic times, our challenge as a nation is to deliver better public services with less cash.  This is difficult but not impossible.  The public bodies that will succeed will be those which combine innovation with tight financial control.  Many public sector organisations have already made significant changes in the way they operate, thus ensuring that they can survive and thrive in a resource-constrained environment.  Others have yet to embrace the reforms that are required if they are to deliver high-quality public services at an affordable cost.  External advisers have an important role to play in enabling them to rise to that challenge.”
