Staff from KPMG took time out yesterday to celebrate with two GB taekwondo medal winners who visited their offices in Canary Wharf.
GB Taekwondo gold medal winner Jade Jones and bronze medal winner Lutalo Muhammad from Walthamstow, spent time with staff from the accountancy firm, who have been the official supporters of the GB Taekwondo team since 2007.
Staff turned out to congratulate the athletes and have their photos taken with them and their medals. Jade and Lutalo amused staff with stories from the athletes village and their experiences over the summer and what the future has in store for them, before presenting KPMG with a signed Taekwondo helmet as a thank you for supporting them for the last five years.
Also in attendance were pupils and representatives from the KPMG sponsored City Academy Hackney, who are working with bronze medallist Lutalo to open a Taekwondo school for pupils.
Mike Kelly, Head of CSR at KPMG, welcomed the athletes to KPMG and gave a short speech congratulating the entire Taekwondo squad. Mr Kelly said : “We are absolutely delighted by Jade and Lutalo’s visit, after such an amazing performance this summer. We have been working very closely with the GB Taekwondo squad for several years and they have gone from strength to strength. The whole team did the UK proud, and KPMG is really excited by the prospect of working with the team on the road to 2016 in Rio.”
KPMG has supported GB Taekwondo for the last 5 years through funding and pro-bono advice, helping them grow into the commercial, professional organisation it is today.
Steve Flynn, Commercial Manager for GB Taekwondo said : “KPMG’s support over recent years has been instrumental in ensuring that our athletes have been able to perform to the best of their ability. It’s a fantastic partnership and one that we hope will continue to prosper as we turn our attention towards Rio.”
Jade Jones, gold medal winner added: “It was fantastic to return to the KPMG head office in Canary Wharf having attended the official opening not that long ago. As a team we owe a lot to KPMG and their support has, amongst other things, allowed us to compete and to train abroad ahead of major competitions. That was something I was able to do before winning my Youth gold in Singapore and I believe this was a real springboard for my success this summer.”
