Carbon friendly aircraft to bolster UK aerospace and engineering suppliers, says KPMG

Glynn Bellamy, Partner in KPMG’s Aerospace and Defence practice comments on Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner and its benefits to the UK supply chain:

“The B787 heralds a wave of new aircraft launches expected over the next 10 years as Boeing and Airbus seek to launch the next generation of more efficient aircraft.

“More notably, the delivery of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to All Nippon Airways (ANA) marks good news for the fluctuating UK aerospace and engineering sector, in particular UK based suppliers.

“The B787 will clearly boost UK original equipment manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers such as Rolls-Royce and GKN but its benefits are also expected to filter down the supply chain to the SME sector which provides a variety of components and engineering support on the B787 including machining, casting and treatment.

“In today’s volatile economic climate, oil prices are becoming more accepted as a structural rather than cyclical trend, airlines are seeking ways of reducing their operating cost through more fuel efficient aircraft.

“We must not forget that the UK supply chain is well positioned to benefit from new fuel efficient aircraft. Therefore, as the demand for more efficient aircraft increases, this will benefit the likes of UK suppliers such as GKN and Umeco.”
