Network operators are definitely in the midst of the ‘Telco perfect storm’. They clearly understand the challenges and opportunities ahead of them; for many, the question is simply ‘now what?’

We believe it begins with Telcos recognising the characteristics that are required to ride out the storm. Please click on the play icon in the video below to hear more about these attributes:

Hello, I am Joe Gallagher, KPMG’s UK Head of the telecoms.

I would like to introduce KPMG’s view on the top five attributes needed for today’s telecoms organisations to succeed, or to be frank, in my view, for some of these organisations to be able to survive, through the next decade.

It can sometimes be hard for telcos just to hang on for the ride, never mind seizing the opportunities for new revenue streams, which arrive and potentially depart at speed.

The need to invest is relentless – from capital expenditure in fibre or spectrum licences to creating an engaging proposition for customers, shareholders and strategic partners.

Unfortunately, this need to invest is matched by revenue and margin squeeze together with High debt burdens, especially for telcos in Europe and the Americas.

Those organisations that can meet and overcome these challenges are really "riding out" the perfect telco storm.

In order to do this successfully I believe that telecoms organisations need to have the following 5 attributes:

1. Firm wide ownership of strategy and innovation, an ability to keep up with the pace of such a fast-moving market

2. The ability to create real value through collaborations - whether Joint Ventures or partnerships

3. Really understanding what the needs and expectations are of their customers and offering services that exceed these expectations and build trust.

4. Having access to adequate network infrastructure, with some portion of the burden and risk transferred to other parties.

5. And finally a resilient balance sheet that has the ability to self fund strategic change.

If you are interested in discussing the performance of your telco business through the lens of the ‘five key attributes’ that I have described or participating in research and/or debate forums on these 5 topics, please get in touch, I would be absolutely delighted to hear from you.

Mobile payments are evolving rapidly and changing the way consumers and businesses operate. As technology and telecoms companies roll out mobile payment applications and services, this survey reveals that mobile strategies are enabling a business transformation for services firms, telecom providers, technology vendors, banks and retailers across the globe. Cross-sector partnerships and alliances will be key to success in this dynamic market.

The Executives who will run telecoms in 2020

The telecoms industry will become ever more critical to our world over the next decade. And the growing globalisation of communications will increasingly influence the profile of those leading the sector. The leaders of today have overseen radical developments in the ways in which we communicate and this spirit of innovation will be key to the sector's future success. Businesses need to be identifying and recruiting the right people for the future and training them to have the right skills for the global businesses of the next decade - and beyond.
