Energy is in high demand: Since 1973, electricity usage has more than tripled, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). And the trend continues to point upward. The IEA figures prepared in September 2010 show that industry is responsible for about 42 percent of consumption. In addition to agriculture, services and private households, this sector is critical to ongoing efforts to lower energy consumption while simultaneously maintaining or even improving productivity and efficiency. But just how can these gains be achieved? As the IEA outlined in its annual "World Energy Outlook," the global battle against rising levels of CO2 emissions will primarily be fought with the weapons of increased energy efficiency.
