It has been a challenging year. The beginning of 2009 saw consumer demand right around the world begin a collapse and resulting significant reduction in consumer spend that many feared would prove lasting and thus a paradigm shift. Most threatened were premium goods businesses of every kind, from consumer staples to grand luxury. Consumers reacted to tighter borrowing conditions and a powerful uncertainty over job security in the way they always do — by cutting back on anything that was discretionary.
