FIPS - Review of 2009 (Banks)

Registered Banks, Finance and Savings Institutions

Is it safe to get back in the water?

KPMG’s Financial Services Group is proud to present our Financial Institutions Performance Survey which provides analysis of the registered banks, the Finance companies and the savings institutions sectors in New Zealand.

The global banking crisis combined with a domestic recession made 2009 a particularly challenging year for the banking industry.

While New Zealand financial institutions faired far better than their overseas counterparts they had significant loan losses and funding pressures to deal with.

With the recession at an end and green shoots appearing in parts of the economy, we believe there is room for optimism with opportunities and challenges ahead. Albeit it is now a different world we are operating in with an increased emphasis on new regulatory developments.

Many financial institutions appeared to stand on the waters edge in 2009. Most are now ready to step back into the water.

So, once again, KPMG's Financial Services Group is proud to launch our Financial Institutions Performance Survey providing our analysis of the registered banks, the finance companies and the savings institutions sectors in New Zealand.

This will outline what's happened in the industry, who's growing, what margins have done and the other key trends for the period with both an industry overview and sectorial performance analysis.
