In January 2011, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria signed the Employee's Compensation Bill (“the Bill”) into law. The Employee's Compensation Act (“the Act” or “ECA”) 2011, which repeals the Workmen's Compensation Act (WCA) of 2004, is designed to provide an open and fair system of guaranteed and adequate compensation
for employees or their dependants in the event of death, injury, disease or disability arising out of, or in the course of, employment. The Act is also intended to provide for safer working conditions for employees by ensuring that all relevant stakeholders contribute towards the prevention of workplace disabilities and other occupational hazards.
