Celebrating the Independence Day at KPMG

KPMG in Mauritius organised a small gathering to commemorate the National Day on Friday 11 March, 2011.

Mr Liong, Senior Partner KPMG explained that Mauritius has come a long way from being predominantly a mono-crop economy to a robust economy diversified in various field such as tourism, textile, finance..just to name a few. He highlighted the efforts of earlier generations, that have toiled to make Mauritius what it is today. It is only through sustained economic growth and development that we can remain competitive. We thus play a fundamental role in the development of the nation by providing clarity in a world of complexity.

In line with the Government’s Message, Mr Liong seized the occasion to call upon our collective action to raise Mauritius to new heights.

    Guest Speaker

Mr Krishnasamy Ponnusamy CSK, joined the government in 1967 and later retired as the Senior Chief Executive, Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Land Transport and Shipping.

Mr Ponnusamy for his part recalled the history of independence since 1968 but prior to that as he joined the public service in 1966 he was a personal witness on the transitory period during which Mauritius got rid of its colonial status to become an independent and sovereign nation. He laid emphasis on the landmarks of Mauritius development by mentioning the fortunate coalition government in 1969 grouping the two major political parties. That in fact allowed Mauritius to take off economically with the creation of more economic pillars such as tourism, textile and EPZ industries and also an important participation of the private sector. He encouraged the younger generating to reflect on the daunting problems on the horizon namely food security, climate change and energy, water issues and democratic reforms. He laid great emphasis on the importance of the continuous efforts to Nation Building.

The Session was followed by the flag raising ceremony and refreshments.
