The report, “m-Powering India” was released by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Honourable Prime Minister of India, during the inauguration of India Telecom 2011 – the annual telecom sector event jointly organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The report was released on 7 December 2011.
This report focuses on the future of Mobile Value-Added Services (MVAS) in India and its role in empowering the nation. It highlights several key m-services such as m-banking, m-education, m-governance, m-health, m-agriculture, etc., and deliberated on their growth drivers and challenges. The report also underlines the key role that equipment manufacturing and infrastructure development will play in making MVAS another exemplary chapter in the successful Indian telecom growth story.
The upcoming decade will usher in an information era through MVAS. A conducive regulatory environment, the focus on India’s untapped rural sector, enhanced quality of services, better technology and increasingly affordable devices are imperative for MVAS to be able to empower each and every citizen of India – both rural as well as urban.
