Disaster Response

Devastating natural disasters are occurring with increasing frequency, exacerbated by climate change, and are disproportionately affecting those who are least resilient. In the five years from 2000 – 2005 there were 2,788 natural disasters which is more than in the 80 years from 1900. 92 percent of people reported killed and 98 percent of those affected by natural disasters live in developing countries and the least developed countries.

As a global network of member firms, natural disasters affect everyone at KPMG - our people, our communities and our business. Our responses to the catastrophic natural disasters which have occurred in recent years powerfully demonstrate our values that 'we are committed to our communities', 'we work together' and 'we lead by example'.

Governance

KPMG International's disaster response is governed by a policy of guiding principles – called the 'RESPONSE' framework. It is a structured approach designed to evaluate the most efficient and appropriate course of action - from identifying NGO collaboration projects to facilitating global communications.

Fundraising

The scale and scope of the relief and recovery efforts KPMG firms have been involved with is significant. Following a disaster, KPMG firms organize fundraising efforts raising money which is channelled through our chosen NGO and UN development partner organisations including UNICEF, Save the Children, World Vision and the Red Cross / Crescent Societies.

Putting our Skills to Work

In recent years, we have evolved our disaster response strategy as we've learned that if we apply our business skills as well as our money, we can make an even greater, more lasting difference. We do this in collaboration with non-governmental organizations which have vast expertise, operations on the ground, and a global reach and outlook to match our own. Working alongside them we help to alleviate suffering, promote economic development and rebuild communities. In addition, our firms often maintain lasting commitments to communities throughout their post-disaster recovery and development, such as through ongoing support to educational institutions which we were involved in rebuilding.
