Turkey - Increased consumption tax for cars, fuel, alcoholic beverages 

September 26:  In Turkey, the special consumption tax amounts or rates for passenger automobiles, gasoline, and certain alcoholic beverages have been increased.

The Council of Ministers issued decision 2012/3735 (published in the official gazette on 22 September 2012), which provides for increased consumption tax amounts or rates. The special consumption tax is a tax similar to an excise tax or duty. The new amounts / rates have immediate effect.


The increased special consumption tax is:


  • For passenger automobiles with an engine capacity up to 1,600 cc—40% (up from 37%)
  • For gasoline—increased by 0.30 Turkish lira per liter
  • For certain alcoholic beverages—increased by 15 Turkish lira per liter

In addition, under new measures, the rate of registration fees due on transfer of immovable properties has been increased from 0.165 % to 0.2%.
