European Union - Updated lists of excise tax rates

July 13:  The European Commission on 12 July 2012 updated the lists of excise tax (duty) rates that apply in the EU Member States (as of 1 January 2012).

Background

Excise taxes or duties are indirect taxes on the consumption or the use of certain products. Unlike value added tax (VAT), excise taxes are expressed as a monetary amount per quantity of the product.

The most commonly applied excise taxes are those on:

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Manufactured tobacco products
  • Energy-related products (motor fuels and heating fuels including petrol and gasoline, electricity, natural gas, coal and coke).

All EU Member States apply excise taxes to these three product categories.
