Canada - Expanded WSIB coverage for Ontario construction sector

November 16:   Companies and individuals doing construction in Ontario that previously did not have to pay Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) premiums may have to begin paying these amounts beginning 1 January 2013.

New mandatory WSIB coverage affects independent operators, sole proprietors, some partners in a partnership, and some executive officers who work in construction.

This new measure could result in WSIB premium cost increases between $3,000 to $15,000* per executive officer.

In addition, construction companies and other entities awarding construction contracts need to obtain WSIB clearance certificate, which confirms that a business is registered with WSIB and has an account in good standing.
