Vietnam - VAT declarations for branches; individual income tax guidance 

August 27: Vietnam’s tax authorities issued guidance to the local tax offices concerning how to determine the value added tax (VAT) declaration for companies and branches established from 1 January 2014.

This VAT guidance notes that a branch may adopt the same VAT declaration as adopted by the company headquarters.

Other VAT-related guidance concerns VAT refunds for expansion investment projects during construction periods.

Individual income tax guidance

Vietnam’s tax authorities released guidance concerning the individual (personal) income tax treatment of, among other topics:

  • Taxable housing allowances
  • Exempted income (e.g., overtime work, night-shift work) and effects on computing taxable income
  • Expatriate employees and the responsibility of employers for their unpaid income tax
