Switzerland - Free trade agreement with China

July 3: A free trade agreement between Switzerland and China entered into force 1 July 2014.

The free trade agreement was signed in July 2013, and reduces the trade barriers for goods and services and provides controls for the protection of intellectual property rights.

Under the free trade agreement:

  • Most Swiss goods imported into China will face a tiered customs duty minimization or elimination approach—that is, many goods eligible for preferential duty status will be subject to a reduced or zero customs duty rate (either effective immediately or after a transition period ranging from five years to 15 years).
  • The majority of goods exported from China to Switzerland will be duty-free, effective 1 July 2014.
