Social security tax

Are there social security/social insurance taxes in Gibraltar? If so, what are the rates for employers and employees?


Yes, there are social insurance taxes. Rates are as follows. An individual may be exempted from paying Gibraltar Social Insurance contributions if they can satisfy the Gibraltar Authorities that they are paying contributions in their home country’s scheme, which is the equivalent to the Gibraltar Social Security system.


  • employer’s share – 20 percent of the employee’s gross earnings, subject to:
    1. a maximum of GBP32.97 per week
    2. a minimum of GBP15 per week.
  • employee’s share – 10 percent of his/her gross earnings, subject to:
    1. a maximum of GBP25.16 per week
    2. a minimum of GBP5 per week.
  • self-employed contributors – 20 percent of the employee’s gross earnings, subject to:
    1. a maximum of GBP30.17 per week
    2. a minimum of GBP10 per week.

Stamp duty is payable on the purchase of real estate as follows:


  • up to GBP200,000: zero
  • between GBP200,001 and GBP350,000: 2 percent on the first GBP250,000; 5.5 percent on the next GBP100,000
  • GBP350,001 and over: 3 percent on the first 350,000, 3.5 percent on the excess.

Stamp duty on mortgages is as follows:


  • GBP200,000 or less: 0.13 percent
  • More than GBP200,000: 0.20 percent.
