Shale gas – Focus on M&A in China

As China’s shale gas production advances through its early development phase, the best opportunities appear to lie in joint ventures between domestic and foreign firms through both inbound and outbound investments for extraction technology and potentially for infrastructure development, both of which are vital to the industry’s future.

With shale gas development still in its early stages, the success and speed of growth of this market within China depends on a series of unknowns, both below and above the ground. Below the ground, shale gas has been identified in many locations in China but little is known about its gas composition. Early findings have revealed potential extraction issues that could prove time-consuming and costly. The main issues include water availability, infrastructure, regulations, and pricing uncertainty.
