It’s been our vision for a while now to build a community around the topic of Family Business, and it’s finally come to fruition. I know that being a part of a family business can often be a lonely place, with unique challenges, and we at KPMG wanted to create a way to share experiences and start a conversation around family business.

We want to connect with you, and share our insight, our experience, our research, and our point of view, and we want to talk about what matters to you in the day-to-day running of your business.

A digital family business community

KPMG is passionate about family business; we are a family business ourselves, and so we understand what makes the family-run business different. Over the years I’ve worked with a wide scope of businesses, and KPMG’s founding firms have been working with family businesses for more than 100 years, so I believe our member firms can provide a valuable perspective on the unique issues and challenges faced by family owned companies.

As a global network of member firms, we’re embracing new media, and the new ways in which consumers and businesses are communicating, both internally amongst themselves, and externally with each other. This blog (and the corresponding social networks) is just one way for the family businesses out there to connect and engage with KPMG, as well as your peers in family business. Together, we can grow in our understanding of the specific business challenges that are unique to family-run businesses.

Over the next few months, I’ll be sharing articles and insight around some of the topics that we’ve seen family businesses grapple with every day, such as governance, succession, philanthropy, risk management, exit strategies, wealth preservation, growth, and much more. Issues that family businesses should seek to manage effectively in order for their business to remain competitive and, more importantly, for there to be a lasting legacy for the generations to come.
