Thermal Coal Q2 2012 – July 2012

The average spot price for thermal coal in the second quarter of 2012 was US$96/t, down 20 percent over the first quarter average of US$120/t. Similarly, the contract price for Japanese fiscal year (JFY) 2012 has settled at US$115/t, down 11 percent from US$130/t in JFY2011. The surge in supply from Indonesia and the US, which continues to outpace the slow demand growth in Asian countries, has led to this price decline.
