Thermal Coal Q2 2011 – October 2011

The average quarterly free on board (FOB) prices of thermal coal at Newcastle were US$128/metric ton (mt) and US$120/mt for the first and second quarters of 2011, respectively. In the second quarter of 2011, the spot price rose from US$122/mt on April 1, 2011 to a high of US$123.2/mt on April 8, 2011. This significant price increase in the first quarter was mainly due to the disruption of supply from Australia, following the severe flooding in Queensland. During the second quarter, however, prices eased due to the decline in thermal coal imports from China and Japan.
