Global cloud providers survey

The percentage of revenue from cloud-based services is expected to double in the next 2 years as users migrate to the cloud. Cost reduction is one of the main reasons for using cloud and providers say one of their biggest challenges is to produce evidence of savings as part of a compelling business case.

Customer adoption: Barriers to cloud usage

Providers believe their customers' single biggest reason for choosing cloud services is to lower costs; and say their biggest barrier is building a robust business case for justifying the switch to cloud.

The customer decision-making process

CIOs and CTOs were identified as key influencers in making the cloud purchasing decision and providers feel there is a need to educate customers in areas such as data security, pricing models and contractual agreements.

Service level agreements

Fifty-nine percent of providers have service level commitments in their cloud SLAs. This is expected to rise to 68 percent within 3 years as providers strive to reassure customers over security and cost-effectiveness.

The cloud deployment eco-system

Users are migrating core systems and critical infrastructure to the cloud, with PaaS and IaaS increasing over the coming years. Consequently providers feel that customers will continue to seek strategic direction and guidance.

About Global cloud providers survey

KPMG’s 2012 global survey looks at how cloud providers around the world are responding to fast growth and changing customer needs to build a strong and compelling argument for migration to the cloud. The survey was carried out by Forbes Insights on behalf of KPMG during July and August 2012 and features 179 respondents involved in cloud provision at a senior level, representing providers across more than 10 countries.
