Building & Managing a Sustainable Cloud Service
The Cloud Computing Model
Gary Matuszak — Global Chair, Information, Communications & Entertainment, KPMG LLP — Cloud computing, when I narrow it down to its simplest form, is all about shared infrastructure. So, it’s taking parts of a business model that before one vendor or one particular company would own end-to-end and taking a look at that and sharing part of it. So, you are sharing the storage, you are sharing the servers and those are out there put in the cloud. So, you don’t own them but someone else owns them and you can go in and access that and you can increase the amount of time you need, the amount of information you need, the amount of storage you need or you can cut it back. So, you have the ability to avoid making a major infrastructure investment on your end and go out and access stuff that somebody else has provided out in the cloud.
Kieran Lane — Asia-Pacific Chair, Information, Communications & Entertainment, KPMG Australia — If you take all of your IT infrastructure which is your hardware, your platforms, and your applications and you basically outsource that to a provider, what they’ll do is they’ll take all the intellectual property and use it and what you’ll do is you’ll pay them for the use of the property. So, cloud computing essentially is the outsourcing of all your technologies, structuring, assets to a third party provider.
Tom Lamoureux — Risk Advisory Services Leader, Global Information, Communications & Entertainment, KPMG LLP — As many news articles are written about cloud computing, there are just about that many definitions. I really like, I think, the research from Gardener had a pretty good definition or paraphrasing. But they defined it really, and I think this gets to the essence of it as a style of computing that has characteristics that are both very scalable, very elastic, delivering the product as a service using internet technologies to multiple customers.
