KPMG Congratulates Belmont University, in the United States the 2012 Enactus (formerly SIFE) World Cup Champions

Enactus champions
KPMG International is delighted to congratulate the 2012 Enactus World Cup Champions – the team from Belmont University, in the United States. Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), the world’s best-known and most successful program helping university students to create community empowerment projects, has changed its name to Enactus to reaffirm its long-standing commitment to using entrepreneurial action as a catalyst for progress. KPMG has been involved with Enactus since 1996 and today provides national support in over 35 countries. It is this level of commitment to developing young entrepreneurial talent that has also led KPMG to be the title sponsor of the Enactus World Cup through 2014.

Enactus brings together a diverse, passionate and global network of university students, academic professionals and industry leaders around the shared mission of creating a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business.

Each national Enactus organization is eligible to send a national champion team to the Enactus World Cup. The Enactus World Cup is an exciting event where these teams present the results of their community outreach projects that are intended to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need, to panels of prominent global business leaders who serve as judges. Through a written annual report and live audio visual presentation, teams are evaluated based on how successful they were at creating economic opportunity for others.

This year’s winning presentation theme from Belmont University was "Breaking Down Mattresses to Rebuild Lives”, which focused on building a recycling business aimed at achieving a greener environment and enabling an eager, capable workforce. The idea came to the Belmont University Enactus team when they learned that nearly 85 percent of materials in a mattress are recyclable, however most end up in the trash. Secondly, the team recognized their community had members who needed to turn their lives around, but had few opportunities to do so. To date, 9,600 mattresses and 340,000 pounds of metal, foam and cotton have been recycled through the “Spring Back” recycling project. There are also plans for this sustainable business model to be duplicated in other US markets including Colorado and Missouri. Best of all, eight men now have consistent employment and a greater hope for the future.

KPMG would also like to congratulate the other 2012 Enactus World Cup finalists:

2nd Place: French University in Egypt, Egypt

3rd Place: HR College of Commerce and Economics, India

4th Place: Midlands State University, Zimbabwe

KPMG has played a critical role in the international expansion of Enactus, providing support and staff involvement in dozens of countries and serving as one of the sponsors of the Enactus World Cup, since its inception in 2001.

“Enactus students are some of the most dynamic and compelling young adults anywhere and we are honoured to support them. Enactus brings together the leaders of tomorrow: young people who want to make an impact and who take personal responsibility for turning ideas into action,” said Lord Michael Hastings of Scarisbrick CBE, Global Head of Citizenship, KPMG International. “At KPMG, a key part of our global vision is to help others achieve their full potential and make a difference in the world. We truly believe that Enactus enables youth to explore possibilities, apply their best thinking, and achieve real and lasting results for communities around the world.”
