Securing the safety and reliability of the electric power infrastructure within the United States is no easy feat. Yet, that’s exactly the mission of North American Electric Reliability Company (NERC), which is charged with developing and enforcing regulations to ensure reliability of the bulk electric system. Currently, NERC has developed a series of Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards designed to protect against physical and logical (cyber-related) threats and ensure the safety and reliability of the power system.
For power and utility companies, adhering to these standards can seem an overwhelming task. This KPMG paper aims to answer various questions related to implementing a sustainable NERC CIP compliance program, outlines the building blocks needed to develop the program and provides insight into the potential benefits of deploying a phased approach to help overcome challenges while achieving compliance objectives.
