A new study from KPMG International shows that traditional methods of management are no longer sufficient to confront what is today a given for doing business globally: managing complexity. The findings reveal that business complexity is real and serious issue for senior decision makers and is a primary source of additional risk, cost and management challenges. The study, Confronting Complexity: Research Findings and Insights, is based on interviews with 1,400 senior executives from seven industry sectors in 22 countries. These global business leaders indicate they are faced with a continuous stream of issues and are striving to find new solutions that can harness complexity and also take advantage of the opportunities it may bring for future business success. More than seven out of ten believe complexity can create new opportunities for their businesses, including gaining competitive advantage, creating better strategies, expanding into new markets and improving efficiencies. However, leaders worldwide also report that managing their companies is becoming steadily more difficult because of increasing government regulation, rapidly changing technology and problems with managing increasingly complex information. The result is increased risk, escalating costs and an ever-growing need for new skills among employees.

The KPMG research shows that the issue of complexity has risen to the top of the business agenda and corporate leaders are seeking ways to embrace it, find efficiencies and seek new and perhaps unprecedented ways to embed agility and innovation into their corporate cultures.
