Managing challenges in the global semiconductor industry: a survey of industry executives — first quarter 2009

KPMG’s fourth annual global survey, conducted in collaboration with the Semiconductor Industry Association, polled senior-level executives at the top 100 global semiconductor companies, including integrated device, foundry and fabless manufacturers. This year also explored trends in ‘green’ semiconductor products and initiatives.
The survey was conducted from October to December 2008. We received about half the responses to our survey by October 31 and received the second half of our responses in November and December with substantially different answers.

Executives' views on 2009 revenue growth are very pessimistic, and they anticipate a steep decline in profitability over the next 12 to 18 months. In addition, the majority of executives believe R&D and CapEx investment will decrease next year, and they see significant workforce contraction in a period where the need for critical workforce skills remains high. The silver lining appears to revolve around green technology, for which executives predict a fairly robust future.
